Gadolinium-based contrast agents are drugs administered intravenously prior to certain MRI or MRA procedures. Gadolinium has been linked to nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF/NFD). This disease is characterized by tight skin that can lead to joint immobility and fibrosis that can result in multi-organ failure. It is suspected that people suffering from severe kidney dysfunction are most susceptible to Gadolinium induced NSF/NFD. The FDA has asked manufacturers of these agents to place a black box warning (the government’s strongest alert) on the packaging and in the accompanying literature. There are currently five gadolinium-based contrast agents available, with Omniscan being the most widely used. They are Magnevist, MultiHance, Omniscan, OptiMARK and ProHance. If you or someone that you know has utilized any of these agents and have had any health problems, please do not hesitate to contact us for further information or to discuss your rights.
